Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 108722
Printing Comment crashes 3.2 rc4
Last modified: 2010-02-03 12:53:05 UTC
Printing a comment in a writer file crashes OOo 3.2 RC4 on Win2k system (SP4). If the comment is removed, or its printing suppressed, the text prints OK. Discussion in thread http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=26842 where there is a report that the comment prints in 3.1.1 and 3.2 RC3 under Fedora Linux 11
Created attachment 67447 [details] Dummy rtext file, one Comment, Comment crashes printing on 3.2 RC4 Win2k
NOT reproducible with "Ooo 3.1.1 WIN XP DE[OOO310m19 (Build 9420)]"! Can't check with 3.2RC
Cannot confirm with 3.2rc4 on WinXP. Prints fine with Comment. Will try on W2k later.
I upgraded another Win2K machine to OOo 3.2 RC4 and it handled the test file perfectly. I reverted to the original Win2K machine and discovered that the file printed correctly to one (network) printer, but not to the other. I removeed 3.2 and reinstalled it and the problem persists. The problem seems to be related to the printer installation on a particular workstation. Later today I will remove, reboot and reinstall the printer in question and report back.
MRU->roryof: thanks for the info. It would be good to know on which Printer type OOo crashes. Maybe it does also on other platforms with this special printer. Did it also crash in the past with older OOo builds (like 3.1.1 or 3.0)? Does it only crash when using this as non-network printer?
mru: the printer is a Kyocera FS1600+. It runs reliably on earlier versions of OOo (from StarOffice 7 onward) and lives on LPT1 on a Win2k workstation acting as server to a small network. In summary: the printer prints the test file perfectly as a local printer on the server, and as a network printer from one W2k workstation, but not as a network printer from a second W2k workstation. Later today I will remove and reinstall the printer to that workstation to see if that cures the problem.
I deleted the printer in question from the workstation (W2K), rebooted, ran a registry cleaner, then finally reinstalled the network printer. Still the same problem! If I print a Writer file (3.2 RC4, also 3.1.1 originated files that have previously printed under 3.1.1) and comment to that printer, OpenOffice ceashes. The act of printing the comment seems to cause the crash. Turning off comment printing allows the file to print correctly. Interestingly, an adjoining workstation (also w2k) prints the same file and comments to the same printer without problems.
Do you get the Error-report-front-end from OOo after it crashes? Would be great if it is possible to send a crash report via the front-end. Curious circumstances... - does not crash on different machine/same printer -> lets me think of problem of that certain machine - does work with 3.1.1 on same machine -> lets me think of bug in OOo... not so easy to solve with "remote diagnosis" ;-)

I attach the only error report from OpenOffice I can find; I don't think this will be much help, as it seems to be substantially blank. If there is another report, please advise possible name or l;ocation. I am now confident that this problem is machine specific - it does not happen on abn adjoing workstation (W2K also) to the same printer, nor does it happen from the "bad" workstation to another printer. I have deleted/reinstalled the network printer, with no cure. The "bad" woerrkstation has previously (V3.1.1 and earlier) printed OpenOffice files with comments.

No, this kind of report is not helpful at all... I meant, that there should be the OpenOffice crash report front end after OpenOffice crashed. There you should have the possibility to click "send" and it will be submitted to our database. If this report tool does not appear I think that this problem is not in OOo to be found, more in the printer driver which may be damaged.
The only other report is the "soffice.bin has crashed". Fixing this is not a priority for me, as in general I don't print Commeent/Notes. using then only for steering my writing or editing of a file. Probably it will go away, as funny problems often do! If I did need to print the Comments/Notes I can do so from another workstation.
This is only reproducible on this certain machine thus I think it is a problem of the printer driver. OOo will not open its crash report front end, which confirms my assumption that the crash happens in a different part than OOo. Resolving this as "worksforme".
Closed.
