Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 66261
sheet tab font too small
Last modified: 2023-03-28 21:36:28 UTC
I and others find the font size on sheet tabs too small. I seek either a way to alter the font size or an amendment of code so that the font is, for example, a set percentage (say 75%) of the menu font size. The former would be preferable. Although I have classed this as an enhancement, I imagine that for people of poorer eyesight it would be regarded as a defect.

I was able to return the tab fonts to a readable size (on windows) by changing the desktop theme back to windows standard. I would say this has something to do with the system font chosen for the tabs. Some windows themes have such crappy fonts it doesn't suprise me at all.
Evidently, the Windows Control Panel can be used to rectify the size of tab fonts. My experience is limited to KDE on Linux. The tabs on the Firefox browser are quite readable. I have adjusted mine by tinkering with a chrome file but it really wasn't necessary to do so. I also filed issue 56530 regarding dialog fonts. OpenOffice does not adopt desktop settings in KDE with regard to the size of dialog fonts either. It may be a KDE integration problem. BTW, I am not getting messages about issues.
SAVE MY EYES!!!! I am using a MacBook Pro 17" Widescreen and find the sheet tabs at bottom of my screen are too tiny. Is it possible to increase this section of the window to make the tabs larger? It's so so difficult to see the tabs let alone try to select and open them. Please fix the program so we can increase the size of that font in the application as desired.
Same here on OOo 3.2.1 on Fedora 13 LXDE. Tabs on Calc need to have a font size setting. Bug started on 2006, even for an enhancement, it fairly dated. I am surprise to read so few comments regarding font size on the writer tabs, but there are somebug duplicates about the same issue (not marked as bug duplicates). I found their ref. browsing the OOo forums.
I find that the Openoffice version 3.2.1, OOO320m19 (Build:9505) ooo-build 3.2.1.4, Ubuntu package 1:3.2.1-7ubuntu1 which came with Ubuntu 10.10 has the worst sheet tabs so far. The size of the sheet tabs are very small, the font is also cramped due to the small size. We definitely need a way to customize tab size.
OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 OOO320m19 (Build:9505) ooo-build 3.2.1.4, Ubuntu package 1:3.2.1-7ubuntu1 Tab font is too small, and the tab navigation buttons are tiny!
My husband is legally blind. He runs his home business through Calc that is running on Ubuntu 10.10. There is no option (that we have found) to change the scrollbar's font size which in turn would resize the tabs like in windows. The sheet tabs are unusable for him, and hardly working out for me. We are temporarily assigning range names to cells of each sheet, but this really defeats the purpose of having tabs. The machines where this issue is seen are: 2 Lenovo X41 Thinkpad Tablet PCs running Ubuntu 10.10, and Asus EEE PC 701 2G Surf running eeeXandros in Advanced mode. All are running Ooo 3.2.1. On the last machine, it's not so much of an issue, since the screen size is 7" and I only read a single sheet Calc file from there when out shopping, but on the other machines, it is a real issue.
The height of the sheet tabs is the system's scroll bar size, and the font is scaled down to fit into that size. You could try increasing the scroll bar size in your settings.
Issue 117177 seems to be a duplicate.
Five year bug. Wow. There is no option at OOo 3.2.1 to change the scroll bar size. I'm also on Ubuntu 10.10 but I only have the problem since I changed my graphics card (from ATI Radeon X1300/1500 to nVidia GeForce 6150SE). I only had to change the frame rate. So for me either it's a graphic chip or frequency problem.

"Bump" ... just to add this issue affects Mac users as well and is still current. Some Ubuntu users have registered a workaround by altering files, but this is platform specific. http://askubuntu.com/questions/138623/sheet-name-font-size-on-libreoffice-calc-is-too-small

The small text size is also an issue on Mac OSX 10.10.5. The text is very small and from a distance unreadable. Also the top of the text is being cut off. For user's with poor eyesight this unnecessarily reduces quality and should be considered a bug.

I see that MANY people have been requesting improvements to the tab visibility since 2006, and it is now 2023. 17 years is far too long to fix what is clearly a "deficiency" or even a bug. I'm OK with the size of the tab text (but would NOT object to them being larger). The arrows at the left are almost unusable. In LibreOffice they are better, but I no longer use LibreOffice due to its bloatedness and instability.
