DataPilot: wrong caption "Total columns" and "Total rows"
Last modified: 2013-01-29 21:50:42 UTC
Use the More-Button in DataPilot dialog in order to show more options. You can see a checkbox with the label "Total columns" and another checkbox with the label "Total rows". (also see the screenshot attached) These labels must not be plural but singular, because in no case these checkboxes mean more than one single column and more than one single row. Worse: At the moment the caption "Total columns" could be misunderstood as "Total of columns" (what would be a row) and the the caption "Total rows" could be misunderstood as "Total of rows" (what would be a column). This possible misunderstanding is even boosted because of the naming used by the main competitor, a lot of PivotTable/DataPilot users are familiar with (also see the second screenshot attached): Meaning a column, that shows the total results of several rows OOo uses "Total columns" MSO uses "Grand totals for rows" Meaning a row, that shows the total results of several columns OOo uses "Total rows" MSO uses "Grand totals for columns" My suggestion for OOo: Take over the labelling used by MSO, not because we want to copy Redmond, but because it is doubtless and clear.

In my opnion, it's not a defect but an enhancement.
I second the opinion that the labels are misleading. As OO translator for pt-BR and heavy user of datapilot, I ended myself confused when I stumbled on it. Of couse I can change the translated terms to match the common sense, but I prefer to have the english strings ajusted beforehand.
confirming
The plural is there because the "total" result needs several columns or rows if there are several data fields.
