Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 90213
Install should ask to set OO as default application
Last modified: 2013-01-29 21:47:29 UTC
I installed OO 3.0 beta on a Macintosh already running NeoOffice (and no OpenOffice). After installation, .odt (and .odg, ....) files are still opened with NeoOffice The installation routine should ask the user for confirmation to change this setting to default to OO, or just do it rightaway There is a workaround to do this manually by selecting a .odt file, cmd-I and choose OpenOffice as the default program for all .odt files. Users have to repeat this for all file formats

aziem, this is not a duplicate of 89110: 89110 is for Windows, this one solely applies to Mac OS with NeoOffice installed 89110 is about not beeing able to associate file types with OO, this one is about OO file types not beeing automatically associated with OO during installation
Looks like issue 88051.
It is great that Open Office is now a native Aqua application in Mac OS X. However, it is somewhat presumptuous for Open Office to set itself as the default application to open .doc, .xls, .ppt This should be a question that is asked during the installation process and something that is easily changeable in the Preferences menu of Open Office. When you install Firefox, it asks if you would like to make it your default web browser. In the same way, OpenOffice should ASK if you would like it to be the default application for opening .doc, .xls, .ppt etc.
